May 2010 Team Success!
The May Kenya team had a fantastic trip to Western Kenya where they worked in several local schools. The young ladies on our team did a fantastic job with the local girls in frank discussions about life, womanhood and school.

Our team leader, Tanner Colton, and his wife Kolena Allen, were fortunate to observe the kick-off of our newest program, Outcomes for Relationships (which they wrote) in the communities of Holo and Manyatta. The program was a smashing success and we are excited to offer it to more communities in the coming year.

  • Home Visits: Volunteers visit children who are enrolled for assistance in their homes. Spending time in the home gives the volunteer a chance to interact with the children and their families and appreciate their challenging situation.

  • Assessing Children: Village Care trains team members to work with African volunteers and help families living in remote villages assess orphans in their care. The VCI "Quick Assessment" helps to identify childrens needs and to define a plan to assist the children to thrive, rather than survive. Volunteer team members are helping VCI to make certain each child enrolled in our program is getting proper assistance, and follow up visits in a timely manner.

  • Community Discussion: Village Care believes that community discussion is a great forum for change. Team members may work with African volunteers to assist with Open Space discussion sessions,
where the community identifies projects they will focus on to improve
their overall health and economic well-being, and put in place project
goals and a community-driven plan for how to achieve those goals.
Additional discussions are held with the youth of partner schools or communities. These discussions provide the youth with a forum for
asking questions they may not ask at home, and to discuss subjects
that are not typically discussed in a family setting in much of Africa.
Team members are encouraged to share their own life experiences
with the youth. Girls will be hosted by female team members and boys
by the male team members in order to promote freedom and open discussion.

  • Orphanage Visits: Team members visit orphanages that are
partnered with Village Care. The purpose of these visits is primarily to assist homes with documenting critical needs children.
Team volunteers may also organize recreational events for the
children, and provide emotional support and love.
Volunteers may implement projects in orphanages, such as cleaning
the building, doing laundry, helping with meals, organizing requested tutoring sessions, etc.
